Unveiling the social truth: Representation of Ahdāth as Amrād in pre-Nasseri visual texts
Type: Article (work-in-progress)
Abstract: This study argues that many beardless youths in pre-Nasseri Qajar images represent Ahdāth—“recent ones” in Sufi asceticism—rather than Amrād as objects of desire. Analyzing the Murāqqaʿ-i Darāvīsh (Majlis Library) and Ismail Jalayer’s Portrait of Nūr-Alī Shāh (1865), it reframes these depictions as spiritual proximity to the Source, drawing on Ibn ʿArabī’s aesthetics and related textual traditions. The article challenges modern heteronormative readings and highlights indigenous concepts of beauty in Persianate visual culture.
